What we collect, and what we don't.
Chart Solar is independent. We make money on credit packs, not on your data. This page is the plain-language version of how we handle information; email us if anything is unclear.
Only what a forecast needs.
To run a forecast we need a property address and your utility usage — a bill figure, a Green Button file, or the values you type into the wizard. We resolve the address to map coordinates for the physics model and keep those with a saved forecast so you can reopen it, plus the address itself as a short display label. The free forecast needs no account. If you save a forecast or buy a credit we store an email address for magic-link sign-in and, for purchases, a Stripe customer reference. We never ask for a password.
Your PDF stays until you ask us to delete it.
When you audit an installer proposal we extract the structured facts (system size, pricing, escalator, panel and inverter specs) and generate your report. We keep the original PDF alongside the extracted facts so you can re-run the analysis or fix a mis-upload, and during our beta we may use retained PDFs to improve extraction quality. Salesperson contact details are stripped at extraction either way. You can delete an audit at any time, which removes it — the extraction and the report — from your account. To have the underlying PDF file removed from our storage as well, email privacy@chart.solar and we'll delete it.
To compute your numbers — nothing else.
Your inputs feed the forecast and audit engine and are stored so you can reopen a saved report. We do not sell leads, we do not sell or rent your personal data, and we take no installer commissions. Email is used for sign-in and transactional messages about your forecasts — not marketing blasts.
Aggregated, never identifying.
We compute regional benchmarks (for example, median $/W by coarse ZIP-3 area) from audited proposals. These are aggregated and stripped of homeowner identifiers before anything is published, and gated so no single proposal is re-identifiable. To opt your data out of aggregation, email privacy@chart.solar.
A short list of processors.
Payments run through Stripe; card details go to Stripe, not to us. Address, weather, and roof data come from Google (geocoding and Solar API), NREL (NSRDB), and PVGIS — we send them a location, not your identity. Magic-link emails are sent through an email delivery provider. Sentry collects crash and error reports so we can fix bugs, and PostHog (hosted in the EU, in Frankfurt) gives us anonymous, cookie-less product analytics with no session recording. Each processor sees only the data it needs to do its job.
Access, correction, deletion.
You can ask us for a copy of the data tied to your account, correct it, or have it deleted. Deleting an audit cascades to its stored extraction. Email privacy@chart.solar and we'll action the request. Depending on where you live, GDPR or CCPA/CPRA rights may also apply.
